Indicating improv talent

The Indicators Improv troupe is the self proclaimed premier improvisational comedy group in all of Kentuckiana.

After seeing their show Thursday at the University of Louisville's Thrust Theatre, it's worth considering that they may be right.

The group, founded by acting and performance graduate student James Cronin, uses games infused with audience participation to highlight the comedic talents of its diverse cast.

The show opened with a clown performance by senior theater major Justin Dobring entitled "Lester and Louie Save the World."

His act consisted of two slapstick scenes sandwiched around a slower, more poignant middle in which the actor waxed philosophically in the role of a reformed street hooligan.

Dobring's act is worth seeing due to its unique and dedicated perspective.

The headliners for the evening were the Indicators, and they did not disappoint. Cronin's "hosting" duties were supplemented by quick wits of five group members, who are mostly current or former U of L students.

The evening's performance included games such as Four Corners, Video Store and Freeze, in which performers pause a two-person improvised skit to replace one of the actors and continue the story, often in an entirely different direction.

Highlights included a spontaneous transformation from a wizard to a cat by U of L graduate Neil Mulac, and a four-person improvised skit performed solely by new Indicator and theater performance major Erin Crites.

Alas, the Indicators' shows don't last for hours, but for students who want some guaranteed laughs, they are definitely worth checking out.
