Four students left in Belize

Some program participants say racism at heart of issue, university investigates claim

The International Service Learning Program's annual spring break trip took an unexpected turn this year when four University of Louisville students and an ISLP chaperone were left behind in Belize. The five had to stay in the country after program officials were informed that there were not enough seats to accommodate the entire group on a Continental Airlines flight back to the U.

Fire safety and the availability of university police officers topped the list of discussion items at a forum hosted by the Governor's Task Force on Campus Safety on Tuesday night at the University of Louisville. Held at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, the forum featured about 30 campus, local and state public safety officials, including Metro Louisville Police, the U of L Department of Public Safety and representatives of the State Fire Marshal's office.

Park plans may affect housing

After months of a rumored 12 percent tuition increase, University of Louisville President Dr. James R. Ramsey announced plans for a 9.9-percent hike for the 2007-08 academic year. The increase, which amounts to about $313 more in tuition and fees, still requires final approval by the U of L Board of Trustees and the Kentucky Council on Post-Secondary Education later this semester.

Legality of marijuana sparks student debate

Students' minds lit up during the first of several debates hosted by University of Louisville Properties. Groups for and against legalizing marijuana debated last Tuesday night in Kurz Hall. Sgt. Steve Salyers of the Louisville Metro Police Narcotics/Vice unit moderated the event, and a panel of university faculty, staff and students, including a representative from the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, judged it.

Highway speed limit increase concerns students

Drivers soon will be allowed to cruise Kentucky highways at faster speeds. Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed a bill on March 21 that will raise the speed limit on Kentucky's rural highways from 65 to 70 mph by mid-June. The bill passed the state Senate with an overwhelming 35-2 vote on March 7, after passing the House 62-27.

Famous surgeon lends an academic hand

The Louisville surgeon who received national recognition for helping to conduct the nation's first hand transplant received a thumbs up from premedical and medical students last Wednesday. Dr. Joseph Kutz, MD of the Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center talked to aspiring doctors at the University of Louisville about hand surgery and the life of a surgeon.
