THE GREAT WHITE HYPE: MAC Players need more than slaps on wrists

THE GREAT WHITE HYPE: MAC Players need more than slaps on wrists

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

1 day ago by Levin Black

For five years the Mid-American Conference and its athletes have had a bit of a problem with following the rules. While the MAC is still striving to become a national presence on the athletic fields in the way the Big Ten or any other BCS conference is, it has done a fairly good job of keeping pace with the big guns in national scandals.

Wah wah, go ahead and cry about it

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

17 hours ago by Carlye Wisel

All I've been hearing since I returned to Campustown is a whole lot of complaining. Maybe the thought of being indoors all fall is spreading Seasonal Affective Disorder through the population like an airborne virus on "24," or perhaps we're all just uppity because of McCain or the economy or being physically inferior to our golden god Michael Phelps.

Freshmen girls, listen up because I'm going to tell you some things most boys don't want you to hear. I know you are finally free from your little hick town and thrown into this world of anonymity and freedom. Now you are supposed to let loose, have fun and make mistakes.

Answering the unimportant question of VP

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

1 day ago by Jordan Harp

Months of guessing and hypothesizing finally came to an end Saturday when Barack Obama appeared with Joe Biden, a senator from Delaware, introducing him as his running mate. Ever since he locked up the nomination, the question has been out there about whom he would pick.

College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University, KY

A few months ago, I was talking to the Herald managing editor about who might be opinion editor this semester. I joked that the job didn't seem that difficult. Even I could do it. My little funny got me hired. My first thought: Keep your mouth shut when appropriate, Amber.

STAPLING THE CENTER

Indiana Statesman, Indiana State University, IN

In four days, Barack Obama will give his acceptance speech at Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver. As supporters and protestors begin to arrive, Denver is bustling with Obama T-shirts, buttons, posters, and life-sized cardboard cutouts.

Perhaps John McCain was right about Obama; he is a celebrity.

EDITORIAL: Tuition hike stings

		EDITORIAL: Tuition hike stings

College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University, KY

The cliche that you don't get something for nothing has never been more evident than when considering tuition increases imposed by the Board of Regents for this school year. The 8 percent hike will mean another $257 per semester for the average student. But administrators shouldn't be criticized for making the tough choice to improve Western, although it means students might have to choke down a few more Ramen noodles.

Column: So, you think The DEN is biased?

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Rick Kambic/Opinions Editor

As a reporter and an editor for The Daily Eastern News, I've dealt with countless complaints about the publication. An exuberant student even went so far as to call me a "liberal piece of crap."

Even though I may not be the person responsible for the mistake or the author of the article in question, I'm still an ambassador for the publication and have to handle any situation in a responsible way.

COMMENTARY: 'Sexy journalism' will entice, attract readers

College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University, KY

2 days ago by Jan Diehm

As a journalist, one of the first things you learn is to expect the unexpected. I suppose I should have taken that lesson to heart yesterday when I expected to bike to the Herald office, the sun on my back and the wind in my face. Instead I grabbed my umbrella and trudged to campus as the puddles of water slowly crawled up the legs of my jeans.

So far, the college life here at the U of I has been particularly chaotic. Everywhere you turn you can find a huge event, a sea of orange and blue. And just for showing up you'll be lucky enough to get a free Illinois T-shirt, a few new friends and a side of pizza .

Let's fast forward through time - a few years from now, if all goes according to plan, you'll be clutching that coveted diploma. Afterward you land the job of your dreams in the perfect location with the perfect salary.

Life is good, right? Right, except for the fact that your boss is a sexist pig.

Russia's new approach: Sticking up for the small guy

The All State, Austin Peay State University, TN

2 days ago by Kyle Nelson

Many Americans woke up Sunday morning to the news that Russia had launched a full-fledged invasion of Georgia. I'm sure many reached for their shotguns before the news informed them Georgia was a small country in the Caucasus (the where?), but that's beside the point.

Column: A lot to look forward to

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

As a new semester begins, students and faculty will witness many upcoming changes that will affect campus and our nation.

One of the most prominent and recent events on campus was the opening of the Doudna Fine Arts Center. After construction began in 2001, students and faculty are now able to use the long awaited building and its facilities.

From the Editor: Make the most of your time here

The Sidelines, Middle Tennessee State University, TN

MTSU was for me, at first, a place of transition. I left my university in New York-confused about which direction my academic career would go-and returned home to spend a semester on the familiar campus in the town where I grew up.

I ended up finding my home, my place, and my passion at this school.

School uniforms set freshmen apart

The Sidelines, Middle Tennessee State University, TN

3 days ago by Tiffany Gibson

Looking back on high school and the dreadful cafeteria food, along with satisfactory education, things weren't too bad, but recently high schools have begun developing "freshman academies" in an attempt to completely isolate freshmen.

Their logic behind these academies is that if students are isolated during their freshman year then they are more likely to pursue their education until graduation.

Rowing at Murray State continues on

The Murray State News, Murray State University, KY

4 days ago by Aaron Butler

Following the events of last semester, the rowing program here at Murray State seemed doomed in the eyes of many observers from the outside looking in.

The budget cuts, which significantly diminished the women's team and their enrollment at Murray State, also had a profound effect on the men's program.

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

Sometimes the best part of an experience also can be the most overwhelming. Ball State truly is a great school. I know it sounds like one of the pamphlets the administration puts out to get parents excited about sending us here, but it is true. Ball State will let you experience so many different things.

Keeping it straight at the cinema

Indiana Statesman, Indiana State University, IN

With the recent release of "Pineapple Express," and since the turn of the century there has been a spike in the number of these "simple-minded" comedies. They have attempted to be regarded as drug cinema, but they hardly make the list of the greatest drug movies of all time.

OUR VIEW: Political prestige

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

Congratulations Ball State. Once again the administrators have put students' best interests to mind.

The university prides itself on having top-notch professors with several years of experience in their fields, and one newly hired professor could not get much more experience than being the former mayor of Indianapolis.

Students relying on the military to pay for college should be admired

The Parthenon, Marshall University, WV

Knowledge is priceless, well not necessarily. The cost to attend college continues to rise across the nation. Attending college to earn a degree is one thing- well, paying for it, another.

Students fortunate enough to have parents able to cover the cost of tuition are not burdened by the financial stress of higher education.
